My Personal Reflection - Introduction...

Hello, my name is Meldrick (as you should already know) and this is my E-portfolio. To start this off I have a personal reflection. Here it is -
Two things I am good at are music and writing descriptive paragraphs for several different subjects. Two things I need to improve on are drawing and my reading habits. My goal for the next 6 weeks is to get a really high exam percentage.

Adult Reflection

In your work, I would like to compliment you on the following two things:

  • Two:
In the last six weeks, I will help you achieve your goals by:

Term I Reflection

This term, I learned a lot of different things. I learned what ratios, rates, and what proportional reasoning was. For me, it wasn’t very confusing, because all you had to do was know how to multiply and divide. We also did a Sesame Street video, turning as Sesame Street clip into a math related video. It was fun (for me) but was probably torture to the generous soul who let us in her house (sorry, Anabelle). After I passed (of course) my test, we went into our next unit, which was on the Pythagorean theorem of death (minus the death part). The reason why I dubbed it the ‘theorem of death’ is because some of the questions will make an inferior being cry (literally). Needless to say, it was confusing. The theorem also involves so much writing, your hand will easily develop calluses (unless you are using one of those foam rubber things on your pencil). The difference between 11 squared and 11 cm squared will mean the difference between passing and failing. This unit was the probably the most confusing math has ever gotten (besides the infinite number of pi).
For unit 1, I did all of my work and completed all of my notes. For unit 2, I skipped a few questions, especially when I skipped a whole bunch to get to the deadly question 16 (go to this link).
In term 2, I will try to comment more, and I will try to do all of my work.

Term II Reflection

I really tried to do well in this term. You could say I succeeded... ish.

I did well with surface area and volume this term because if you compared them to the rest of the endless topics in math, they’re relatively easy. In the “greatest volume test”, I got 19 out of 19 correct. I kind of struggled with tax at first, but I got the hang of it fairly quickly. I'll do better next term by checking my work on tests so I won’t make any stupid mistakes and also making sure I do all of my homework.
I learned a lot during the percent unit. I learned how to calculate taxes, handle fees, and most of all, how to make a 5-minute math video with about a dozen people watching you... awkwardly...
The surface area unit was pretty easy. The formulas were simple and easy to learn and you only needed three of them (not including the half a dozen cylinder formulas). The only problem you really run into is the lack of looseleaf that ensues after drawing about 30 nets.
Volume was the easiest of the three. Just three formulas, a pencil, and a calculator away from actually acing a test. Of course, if you don’t screw up multiple choice, your cubic units, your cubic units... if you check your work really good, you should be fine.
In this term, I did really well on the tests, but I didn’t do absolutely all of my work.
In the next term, I will try to do all of my work as well as keeping the test marks up.

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: English Language Arts
TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
I was required to compose a friendly letter using information from a short story.
INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
There are several reasons why I am doing this writing assignment. First, I learned the elements of a short story and learned to identify them in our story. Next, we learned the components to write in a friendly letter format. Then, we applied specific story details and wrote in the first person as if we were a character from the short story.
CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
  • use proper friendly letter format referring to letter frame
  • compose the rough copy letter using specific details from the story and write the letter from the perspective of one of the main characters of the short story
  • remember to use appropriate tone and audience for the letter
  • complete all the steps in the writing process as set out in the writing directions
NEXT STEPS:
I can write a friendly letter.
I can list the elements of a short story.
I can earn a few more marks on the LA exam.

2 Minutes to Make a Difference

Our topic is on the issue of Darfur. It is a small area in Darfur where its own president is oppressing its own people, using a campaign of genocide. A big focal point in my research in the topic was to analyze all the details and numbers of how many people have been affected. We are at the point in the project when are grasping at straws to find almost non-existent pictures of the Darfuri people because the world is too busy focused on 'who wore what better'. This project is due May 29.
